Leaving My Harbor

Posted this in Lex's blog. Thought i should post it here too...

I'll always be a big kid. When I grow too old to remember my own middle name I'll still be that quirky guy imagining that he's really Superman. So leaving to be a grownup isn't what I'm doing. I'm leaving to be me. At the Stork Club things are safe, secure and comfortable. Out in the world, away from the harbor i've moored my ship in, the sea is risky, full of adventures to be had, battles to fight and beauties to rescue. To be myself, I must remove everything else. And the only way to do that is to leave the familiar. I knew such a day was coming. I just didn't know it would be this Friday.

I'm taking my guns to town. I may not come back alive, but i'd rather fain in battle than win by default.

A ship is safe in a harbor, but that's not what ships are built for.

[So I mentioned to Adam the concept of using his comment fields to blog my own entries. Adam found the idea amusing, I've already run the title by him, he found it funny as well. I told Adam that the concept of running my own blog is freighting and scary and I'm afraid of the responsibility. Apparently I have commitment issues I didn't even know about. So I humbly beseech Adam, to occasionally use his comment fields as a stomping ground. I promise to keep my entries short and as non-thought provoking as possible. This paragraph is simply lengthy to explain this concept as well as ask my good friend Adam for his permission to share this small corner of his cyberspace world. What follows is a sample entry.]

A BLOG OF MY OWN

A coworker brought this to my attention the other day. I was querying my fellow man as to the necessity of single sex restrooms. My basic premise behind this argument is that we don't really give second thought when entering a unisex bathroom and therefore there is no real need for the segregation. It was during this conversation that coworker pointed out to me that if you think about it 'technically' a female should not know what a urinal is. They don't install urinals in homes (not normally anyways), and female should not go into doors without skirts on them. I can understand a couple anomalies: Dad brings young daughter into the men's room with him for security, umm someone works at a machine shop or similar environment the unisex bathroom there has a urinal, and various other oddities that would allow some woman to gain knowledge of our vertical thrones. However I guarantee you that any female reading this knows damn well what a urinal is. HOW!!! How is this possible, tell us your secret. Are you just real good when it comes to spreading secrets. Do your mom sit you down when you get your period for the first time welcome you into womanhood and the tell you about the great mystery of the urinal. I'm not really sure what I'm driving at here. Just stay out of bathrooms they're generally dirtier than yours. Thanks Adam.

Urinals are everywhere! In art, in movies, on tv, etc. It's not a big deal. "Boys have penises and girls have vaginas!" That's coming from that little boy in Kindergarden Cop. It's a known fact that the two are different, and so it is not at all suprising that the male species does some things different when it comes to urinating. Even some animals are different by gender. Male dogs lift their leg, females squat. Female fish lay the eggs first, then the male fertilizes it. No sexual interaction whatsoever. A male cardinal is a brillient red color that everyone associates with, while the female is more of a browish color, harder to see. So, I guess I'm just saying that as long as children are learning about sex and swearing by the age of 5, they will also learn about the urinal.

Hey, Adam. Sorry that this comment was kind of in response to Joe's blog within your blog, but I just happened to read your blog this morning and stumbled upon this one. And I always read the comments. I just felt that the urinal thing needed to be addressed in some way. Well, I guess this comment is for you, too, because you were probably curious. Or maybe you were at one time and are not anymore seeing as this is quite an old entry.
